The Dolphins walked away from McDonald Jones Stadium wondering what might have been after falling 13-12 to the Newcastle Knights on Saturday, July 4.
Down 12-0 at halftime, Kristian Woolf’s side looked headed for another frustrating afternoon before producing an outstanding second-half response. Tries to Jamayne Isaako and Kurt Donoghoe, followed by Isaako’s penalty goal, erased the deficit and set up a tense finish. But just when the momentum appeared to have swung decisively towards the visitors, Dylan Brown landed a late field goal to hand Newcastle a one-point victory.
It was a bitter result for the Dolphins, who had spent much of the second half forcing the issue after a first 40 minutes in which they struggled to convert territory into points.
Knights Take Their Chances
Neither side found much fluency early as errors repeatedly interrupted the contest, but Newcastle gradually began to make better use of its opportunities.
The breakthrough came in the 16th minute when Dylan Lucas sliced through the Dolphins’ defensive line to score the opening try. Sandon Smith converted before adding another goal shortly before halftime after Fletcher Hunt finished a strong attacking movement to extend the lead to 12-0.
The halftime margin felt harsh on the Dolphins. They had defended long periods well enough but lacked the finishing touch whenever they threatened the Knights’ line, while Newcastle made the most of the few clear chances it created.
Dolphins Find Another Gear
The match changed quickly after the break as the Dolphins began playing with greater purpose and far more attacking rhythm.
Isaako sparked the comeback in the 51st minute, backing up a line break to score in the left corner. Although he couldn’t convert, the try finally gave the visitors some reward for their growing pressure.
The momentum continued to build as Newcastle began to concede territory. Jake Averillo broke through the defensive line before sending Kurt Donoghoe over for the Dolphins’ second try, and Isaako’s conversion reduced the margin to just two points.
That pressure eventually forced another opportunity when the Knights were penalised inside their own half. Isaako made no mistake with the penalty goal, bringing the scores level at 12-12 and setting up a grandstand finish.
One Moment Settles It
The Dolphins looked well placed to complete the comeback, but the final minutes became a battle for field position.
Phoenix Crossland’s 40/20 proved pivotal, giving Newcastle possession deep inside attacking territory at exactly the right time. The Knights patiently worked themselves into position before Dylan Brown stepped up to slot the one-point field goal with just over four minutes remaining.
The Dolphins continued searching for one final chance after the restart but Newcastle defended the closing stages well enough to hold on until full-time.
For the Dolphins, the performance after halftime showed plenty of character. Unfortunately, the slow start left too much ground to recover, and Brown’s composure under pressure ultimately proved the difference.
Turning Point
The Dolphins had wrestled back control of the contest after Isaako’s penalty goal levelled the scores, but Crossland’s 40/20 immediately swung field position back Newcastle’s way. It allowed the Knights to dictate the final set, creating the opportunity Brown needed to land the match-winning field goal.
