The Cadet Games at Redcliffe brought 186 cadets together on 1 August for PCYC Queensland’s flagship cadet event. The competition focused on teamwork, leadership and community spirit.
The timing also aligned with Youth Volunteer Week. That gave the event added significance as young volunteers took centre stage in Redcliffe.
Cadets came from a wide range of organisations across Queensland. They took part in a day of activities designed to test the skills they had built throughout the year. The event gave them a chance to compete, meet new people and work together.
Communication and teamwork under pressure
Emergency Services and Defence personnel volunteered their time to assess the teams. They watched cadets take on activities that tested communication, practical skills and teamwork.
PCYC Queensland Emergency Services Cadets Program Manager Tina Adams said the day was busy, fun and action-packed. She said the event gave young people a chance to meet cadets from other organisations and make connections in a relaxed setting.
Ms Adams said the games celebrated remarkable young people. She said they also gave cadets a chance to be seen by leaders from the emergency service and defence community.
The format of the day reflected the training cadets had completed during the year. It also highlighted the value of the program in giving young people practical experience and leadership opportunities.
Winning crews take the honours
PCYC Queensland Acting CEO Mitch Ryder said the Cadet Games are a highlight of the PCYC calendar each year. He said it was terrific to see young people excel, work together, make new friends and have fun.
Wolffdene Emergency Services Cadets finished first. Toowoomba Emergency Services Cadets came second, while Childers Emergency Services Cadets placed third.
The event also brought together volunteers and support from across the emergency services and cadet network. PCYC Queensland said volunteering sits at the heart of its work. Adult ESC leaders and volunteers from several emergency services helped run the day.
Support also came from Queensland Police Service, Queensland Fire Department, Queensland Ambulance Service, Australian Red Cross, Surf Life Saving Queensland, Australian Army Cadets, Royal Australian Air Force Cadets, Australian Navy Cadets, Australian Volunteer Coast Guard Association and Volunteer Marine Rescue Association Queensland.
For Redcliffe, the event brought a strong community presence to the town. For the cadets, it provided a chance to compete, connect and put their skills into practice.
