Woody Point cadets could leave their long-time waterfront base for Rothwell after structural problems were identified at the building, prompting some residents to question whether the local facility could instead be repaired.
TS Moreton Bay has operated from Woody Point for around 50 years and currently has 43 cadets and five staff members.
Woody Point Cadets Face Change
Defence is progressing plans to relocate the Australian Navy Cadet unit to a Defence-owned facility at Rothwell, shifting the group from the waterfront site it has used for decades.
The proposed relocation follows a structural condition assessment completed in May 2025 on the council-owned Woody Point building.
The assessment identified structural issues and found the facility was nearing the end of its usable life.
TS Moreton Bay can continue using the building until 30 November 2028 while future arrangements are developed.
Defence and the City of Moreton Bay are working on the transition and future accommodation for the unit. Options being considered also include the maintenance of existing storage facilities at the Woody Point site.
Locals Question Loss Of Waterfront Base
The planned move has prompted discussion among Redcliffe peninsula residents, with some questioning whether the existing building could be repaired instead of the cadets relocating.
Others have raised concern about moving a Navy Cadet unit away from the waterfront setting where it has operated for decades.
The community reaction has not been uniform, and the confirmed structural assessment remains the basis for the relocation plans.
The unit has not yet left Woody Point, and no final relocation date has been identified. Its current use of the site can continue until late 2028.
TS Moreton Bay is one of two Australian Navy Cadet units in Moreton Bay, with TS Koopa based at Sandstone Point.
For Woody Point, the change would mean the departure of a cadet unit that has been part of the local waterfront for about half a century, while planning continues for its next base at Rothwell.
