Fundraising for a Dream

Despite the excitement, the journey comes with significant costs. Amelie has initiated a fundraising campaign to support her trip.

“I love water polo since I was a baby watching it and have been competitively playing since I was 11 years old. I am dedicated and passionate about the sport, travelling over 700 km weekly just for training. Water polo has enabled me to travel interstate where I represented Queensland,” she wrote.

A Passion Rooted in Family Tradition

Water polo runs deep in the Hoefel family. Amelie grew up watching her father, uncle, and grandfather play the sport in Germany. Inspired by their passion, she decided to give it a try after moving to Australia. At the age of 11, she attended a come-and-try session and was immediately hooked.

Her early years were spent with the North Brisbane Polo Bears at Albany Creek Leisure Centre, before she transitioned to the Mermaids on Brisbane’s southside. Now, she trains rigorously for two hours every day after school, juggling commitments to her club, the Australian squad, and her regional school team.

Looking Ahead

Dolphins vs Raiders: Phins Desperate To Re-establish Momentum

Wayne Bennett will be hoping the Dolphins can make up for the loss in New Zealand last week in front of a sold-out crowd in Redcliffe for round 13 of the NRL.

Bennett will be hoping Herbie Farnworth can repeat the huge effort in New Zealand, where he scored a try, had a try assist, 3 line breaks, and 13 tackle busts.

A win last week would have had them level on points with last year’s champions in third and within a win of the table-topping Storm.

Still, they take a 7-win, 4-loss record into their defence of Kayo Stadium against the Raiders from Canberra, which kicks off at 7.35 on Saturday night. With the Dolphins in 4th and the Raiders in 9th, this would appear to be a good chance for the Phins to stay ahead of the Broncos in 5th.

Trai Fuller is back in full back for Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, as he and Felise Kaufusi will miss the game due to Maroons duty. Connelly Lemuelu will cover for Kaufusi in the backrow, and Anthony Milford joins the interchange.

The Raiders will be without Hudson Young, who made the Blues State of Origin squad; Simi Sasagi joins the interchange. Maroons legend Josh Papali is back for the Raiders after his one-game suspension, having retired from Origin football last year. He will go up against Jesse Bromwich in a key matchup, which Raiders Coach Ricky Stuart says is forecast to be wet track.

Since inception, the Dolphins have played the Raiders twice, getting one win each.

Dolphins vs Tigers: NRL Magic Round Continue Festivities at Suncorp Stadium

The 2024 NRL Magic Round will continue over the weekend, promising an action-packed Sunday afternoon of rugby league. Among the pivotal match-ups on May 19 at the Suncorp Stadium are three eagerly anticipated encounters that are sure to keep Redcliffe fans on the edge of their seats. The Warriors clash with the Panthers and the Storm battle the Eels before the main event kicks off: Dolphins vs Tigers at 6:25 p.m.

Warriors vs Panthers

Kicking off at 1:50 p.m, the Warriors and Panthers will both be without their star playmakers. Shaun Johnson’s pectoral injury has dealt a serious blow to the Warriors, who are languishing in 14th place on the ladder.

Reigning champion and second-placed Panthers are no strangers to overcoming adversity, but the loss of Nathan Cleary is a challenge they will have to overcome yet again. Despite the absence of their talismanic leaders, this blockbuster promises to be a fiercely contested affair.

Storm vs Eels

Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy will be looking for an immediate response from his side when they take on the Eels in the 4:00 p.m. clash. The Storm, coming off a loss to the Sharks, have an amazing record at Suncorp Stadium, although they were beaten by the Rabbitohs in last year’s Magic Round.

For Parramatta, the imminent return of Mitchell Moses from a foot injury could provide a timely boost as the halfback makes a late push for a State of Origin call-up. His inclusion would be a welcome addition for the Eels, who will need to be at their best to overcome the relentless Storm outfit.

Dolphins vs Tigers

The resurgent Dolphins, riding a four-game winning streak, will fancy their chances of extending their impressive run when they face the struggling Wests Tigers in the 6:25 p.m. main event. Wayne Bennett’s side could welcome back star fullback Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, further bolstering their top-four aspirations.

The Tigers, mired in a six-game losing skid, will be desperate to turn their efforts into points. With Isaiah Papali’i suspended and Aidan Sezer sidelined, the spotlight will fall on young guns Lachie Galvin and Jahream Bula to provide the necessary spark and inspire an unlikely upset over the in-form Dolphins. This clash promises to be a tantalising contrast of fortunes as the Magic Round reaches its conclusion.

As the Magic Round concludes on Sunday, fans can expect a festival of football like no other, with pivotal battles, potential milestones, and the ever-present unpredictability that makes the NRL’s showcase event a must-watch spectacle.

The contest challenges participants to fashion scarecrows using only recycled and sustainable materials, prohibiting the use of perishable items or pre-made faces and masks. The finished creations must stand independently and adhere to size limitations of 1.5 metres in height and 1 metre in width.

On the 26th of June, participants will have a 30-minute window to assemble and showcase their scarecrows in the horticulture pavillion. Registration for the competition, which is free to enter, closes on the 30th of May.

Prizes for the top two scarecrows include $100 and $50 gift vouchers, generously sponsored by Banjo’s Bakery Café Redcliffe.

Beyond the creative aspect, Hood emphasises the educational value of competition, particularly for younger generations.

“Many children may not know the traditional role of scarecrows in deterring birds from crops,” he said. “This competition offers a way to raise awareness about regional farming practices.”

The 75th annual Redcliffe Show, set to take place at the Redcliffe Showgrounds from the 28th to the 30th of June, is sure to be a highlight of the community calendar. The scarecrow competition promises to be a unique and engaging addition to the festivities.

Demolition of Nurses’ Quarters at Redcliffe Hospital Stirs Memories

The former nurses’ quarters building at Redcliffe Hospital, where countless student nurses forged lifelong friendships while completing their studies, is being prepared for demolition in mid-2024 as part of the hospital’s major $1.1 billion redevelopment project.

For Di Smout, Barb Williams, and Karen Chippindall, who lived in the quarters known as West Block from the 1980s to the early 1990s, the impending demolition evokes a flood of cherished memories. The quarters, which housed up to 60 student nurses at a time in its heyday, served as more than just a building; it was a haven for camaraderie, shared experiences, and lasting friendships.

The former nurses vividly recall their small rooms, each equipped with a single bed, desk, and cupboard, as well as the communal bathrooms, kitchen, and living spaces they shared. Despite the disciplined lifestyle and the pressure of attaining perfect exam scores, they managed to have fun and forge enduring bonds.

Study groups, all-nighters cramming for exams, parties, nights out, and shared meals from the nearby Chinese takeaway were all part of the nursing student experience. The window ledges served as prime spots for sunbathing or sneaking a cigarette, while the communal phone would ring with invitations for the nurses to “come out and play” when Navy ships arrived in Brisbane.

On social media, former nurses have expressed their desire to obtain a brick from the old building as a memento, recalling their time as student nurses in the 1970s and their unique experiences within its walls.

“I remember as a student nurse on night shift, having to take early morning cuppa and give verbal handover/update on night shift events and in- patients to Matron Welsh, who also lived at eastern end of the Nurses quarters. There was also rooms in these premises designated for Nursing Tutors to educate nursing students. Good old days and so memorable,” Sue Dale said.

“What a memory,” Kathy Johnson remarked. “I lived there from 1969-72 when student nurses were not allowed to be married and compulsory to live in during their training.”

“As part of the awesome nursing team who trained at Redcliffe Hospital in the 70’s, & lived in the nurses quarters, I’m asking for the chance to have a brick from the building as a memory. I know a number of my colleagues who feel the same…please can we have a brick?” Lyn Mills asked.

As the former nurses’ quarters building prepares for demolition, the Redcliffe Hospital is undergoing a major expansion project that will deliver a nine-story Clinical Services Building, 204 new beds, and an expansion of existing services, including theatres, emergency rooms, birthing rooms, endoscopy rooms, and various other clinical and support services.

The $1.1 billion redevelopment, one of 11 major hospital expansions undertaken by the state government, is expected to be completed by late 2028 and will support more than 2,500 jobs during construction.
