After undergoing a massive $9 million renovation, The Belvedere at Oxley Avenue in Redcliffe, is ready to welcome guests once again later this year.

Known affectionately as “The Bel,” this 122-year-old landmark has been transformed into a modern dining and entertainment destination based on the designs of KP Architects. The renovations included a complete overhaul of the south side of the hotel, home to the public bar and gaming room.

By mid-September, the new Pavilion Bar and Bistro will open its doors. Additional new bar and dining areas are slated to open in November, including five bars, a pizzeria and a gelato shop.

One standout addition is the former function room turned chic lounge bar and dining area on level 1. With sweeping views of Bramble Bay, this sophisticated space will provide a stunning backdrop for guests to enjoy. In total, the renovated hotel has increased its seating capacity from 800 to over 1,100.

To support the redevelopment, The Belvedere is currently hiring 200 hospitality workers for positions like floor staff, bar staff, kitchen staff and management. The influx of jobs will strengthen the hotel’s workforce as the new venues open.

The driving force behind the renovations is the Lewis Land Group, which acquired the hotel back in 2002. Whilst one bar has remained open since then, the full reopening later this year will showcase the hotel’s restored original features alongside modern upgrades.

Redcliffe Padres Youth Show Grit on World Stage

Despite a tough loss to Puerto Rico that marked the end of their championship hopes, the Redcliffe Padres youth representing Australia at the Little League Intermediate Baseball 50/70 World Series demonstrated incredible sportsmandship and the true Aussie spirit.

Tough Loss to South Korea

Before facing Puerto Rico, the Redcliffe Padres youth alongside other talented players from Narangba Demons and Pine Rivers Rapids took on a strong South Korean side. Jihoon Park homered and drove in two runs for the Asia-Pacific representatives. The Korean pitchers also combined for 13 strikeouts in a 5-1 win over the Australians.

Against the Odds

The Australians then faced a relentless Puerto Rican side in a 22-2 defeat.

The Aussies avoided a shutout thanks to a mighty solo home run by Alonso Zaire Griffin and a run scored by Archie Baert. But Puerto Rico proved too strong on this day.

Pride of the Brisbane North

Baseball.com.au highlighted the team’s strong showing in qualifying out of Australia. They also noted how other teams in the California tournament praised the squad’s impressive conduct and character.

“Your Australian Intermediate League Champions fell out of the championship bracket of the World Series this morning but they represented the country so well,”  they wrote on Facebook.

Head coach David West said he could not be prouder of the team’s outstanding efforts across the whole week. Comments praised the efforts of the young Australian team.

Although the World Series dream came to an end sooner than expected, the experience will help these youngsters continue to improve.

“Big future ahead for these ones.”

Efforts Intensify to Tackle Litter Along Redcliffe Foreshore and Clontarf

As officials prepare to step up litter patrols and enforce fines beginning this August, efforts are being made to address the rubbish problem afflicting the Redcliffe foreshore and Clontarf.

Community organisation Pristine Peninsula has been fighting for better surroundings, and Councillor Karl Winchester (Div 6) has been a steadfast backer of their cause. The Pristine Peninsula group has methodically tracked the types and amounts of garbage along Elizabeth Ave. for the past six years in an effort to improve the area’s cleanliness. They were successful in getting more patrols after two years of tenacious advocacy.

Concerns regarding trash from automobiles on the Hornibrook Bridge were raised after an alarming 37 cigarette butts were found along Elizabeth Ave. during a recent volunteer survey.

The council plans to increase enforcement efforts as a result, focusing especially on littering in Redcliffe’s beach areas and adjoining parkland, seven days a week. A targeted project will concentrate on the Elizabeth Ave., Clontarf community, which has been identified as a particular hotspot for littering.

The organisation’s founder, Les Barkla, expressed gratitude for the expanded patrols but emphasised the necessity for ongoing efforts. For the community to receive the message properly, he emphasised the necessity of daily patrols, as occasional actions are unlikely to have the desired effect. Mr Barkla stressed the need to maintain enforcing litter fines as the problem with litter worsens.

The effects of littering go beyond the obvious debris since it takes hundreds of years for the garbage to disintegrate into dangerous microplastics, which eventually enter the food chain and pose major environmental dangers.

Mr Barkla urged a multimodal strategy that included education, public awareness, and the enforcement of trash fines in order to fully solve the problem. He also promoted the use of packaging that is 100% natural and compostable in order to lessen litter and its long-term environmental effects.

Littering is a well-established offence under Queensland Law, granting Moreton Bay City Council the authority to take decisive action. Through increased patrols and the implementation of fines, the aim is to raise awareness among the community and encourage responsible litter disposal, resulting in a cleaner and more environmentally friendly Redcliffe foreshore and Clontarf.

Micah’s journey started in regional Victoria where she first discovered football. At age 10, her family moved to Redcliffe where she joined the Redcliffe State High School Women’s Football Excellence Program.

She reflected how the school provided her opportunities she never would have had otherwise. She also played locally for Brisbane Blue and Brisbane Central.

During her late teens, Teagan Micah worked locally as a waiter. She loved interacting with customers at Pilpel By The Sea in Suttons Beach and that experience taught her so much about hard work.

After Redcliffe, Micah’s talents earned her a scholarship to the University of California, Los Angeles. She recalled how her teachers at UCLA encouraged her to take the chance. The soccer player said she will always be grateful for their support.

Recently, Micah feared her career was over after a serious concussion left her bed-bound for months. But now she has recovered and is feeling positive. She can’t wait to play in the World Cup, especially with it being in Australia. For her, pulling on the jersey will be emotional.

Micah is hoping to gain her 15th cap in a warm-up match against France, since it’s been a long road back. Whilst focused on the World Cup, Micah still appreciates those who helped her along the way in Redcliffe. She loves getting messages from her teachers, as it reminds her of her roots.

Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that initially causes fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes. Within a few days, a blotchy red rash typically develops which spreads across the body. Measles can lead to serious complications such as pneumonia, brain swelling, and even death in some cases.

Dr Megan Young, a physician with Metro North Public Health said if anyone develops symptoms, they should isolate themselves and seek medical advice immediately.

“Anyone seeking treatment for an illness they think could be measles should call ahead before visiting their GP or medical practice to allow precautions to be taken that can prevent the illness spreading to others,” Dr Young said.

Health officials warn against complacency regarding measles vaccination. Children should receive two doses of the MMR vaccine, whilst adults born in or after 1966 are advised to get vaccinated if they have no documentation of having received two MMR doses or having had the disease previously.

Tragedy Strikes Redcliffe’s Iconic Golden Ox Restaurant as Owner Passes Away, Forcing Closure

The Golden Ox, Redcliffe’s beloved family restaurant and wedding venue, has abruptly closed its doors after nearly 46 years of service, leaving the local community devastated. The closure was prompted by the untimely death of one of its owners, marking the end of an era for the popular establishment.

Long regarded as one of South East Queensland’s premier dining spots and wedding destinations, The Golden Ox announced the heartbreaking news via its social media channels.

“Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, we have had to shut our doors for now. Stay tuned, and hopefully, we will be back again soon!” the post read.

The passing of the owner has left the restaurant in limbo, with weddings and functions that were booked now facing uncertain futures. The venue expressed their sincerest apologies and pledged to reach out to all those who had booked events to discuss their situations personally.

For over four decades, The Golden Ox at Margate had been under the dedicated management of Nick Tzimas and his family. However, last year, they made the decision to put the restaurant up for sale, which eventually led to its sale before Christmas.

Following the sale, Mr. Tzimas retired from the business. Unfortunately, attempts to reach him for comment were unsuccessful at the time of publication.

The closure of the Golden Ox represents the end of a long-standing chapter in Redcliffe’s dining and social scene. The restaurant has held a special place in the hearts of locals and visitors alike, becoming an iconic establishment in the area.

The news of the restaurant’s closure sparked an outpouring of sadness and fond memories from the community.

“Very sad news for new owners family,” a local said. “As long as everyone with wedding booked is issued with a full refund there wont be any issues.”

While The Golden Ox’s future remains uncertain, there is hope among patrons that the beloved establishment will one day reopen its doors. For now, the community mourns the loss of a cherished gathering spot and sends their condolences to the family of the deceased owner.

Hostplus Cup: Redcliffe Dolphins Edge Out Tweed Seagulls in the Inaugural Liam Hampson Cup

The Redcliffe Dolphins (5th) edged out the Tweed Seagulls (7th) in the inaugural Liam Hampson Cup. In a nail-biting and emotional match last Sunday, the game kept fans on the edge of their seats until the final minute — ending with a score of 26-24.

The match served as a tribute to the skilful number nine who had graced both the Tweed and Redcliffe sides during his Hostplus Cup career. Tragically, his life was cut short while on holiday overseas last October.

Meanwhile, the Wynnum Manly Seagulls (3rd) secured a resounding victory over the Northern Pride (6th). With a 30-14 win, the WM Seagulls consolidated their position in the top three of the Hostplus Cup. The WM Seagulls are one point clear of fourth place with a game in hand.

In another match, the Souths Logan Magpies (1st) continued their dominant form by defeating the Sunshine Coast Falcons (9th). A final score of 34-22 kept the Magpies at the top of the competition.

The Burleigh Bears (2nd) took on the PNG Hunters (10th) and came out on top 30-22. The win kept them in the hunt for the top spot on the ladder. The Bears are now level on points with the Magpies with a game in hand.

The results mean there will be no changes at the top of the Hostplus Cup ladder.

The Sunshine Coast Falcons remain in contention despite their defeat and currently sit in ninth place.

The Northern Pride drop to seventh after their defeat, while the Tweed Seagulls slide into eighth place. The defeat of the PNG Hunters has seen them drop to 11th place, intensifying the battle for a top eight finish.

Stay tuned for more high-octane rugby league action in the Hostplus Cup.
