Family Camping Gone Wrong as Girl Wakes Up with Snake in Arm

It was supposed to be a quiet and wholesome family outing, but it turned scary when their little girl woke up to find a snake wrapped around her arm.

The family was on a camping trip on Moreton Island when a snake, which was thought to be a carpet python, managed to crawl into their partially opened tent. Come early morning, their 9-year-old daughter awoke to find the snake coiled up on her arm.

The girl and her father panicked and tried to take the reptile off her arm. But the snake bit them both. Thankfully, the snake was non-venomous. Paramedics took the two victims to Redcliffe Hospital in stable condition.

Snake Warning

Just recently, the Queensland Ambulance Service revealed that there has been an increase in the number of snake bite incidents in the first three months of the year.

From January to March, there were 313 suspected bites, which translates to 3 people being bitten per day. The first quarter number is bigger than the 283 reported cases of snake bites during the same period in 2016.

Partly to blame for the increase in snake bite incidents is the onslaught of Cyclone Debbie. More snakes were found to have invaded people’s homes and backyards in after the cyclone.

Queensland is home to some of the most venomous snakes in the world, including the notorious eastern brown snake.

Redcliffe’s Benji Marshall Suffers Injury, May be Sidelined

Rugby league star playmaker Benji Marshall might be sidelined after suffering from a possible wrist fracture during Redfield’s winning game over Ipswich recently. If confirmed, this will be a “major blow” to his promising debut with the Dolphins. During his Intrust Super Cup debut, the former Tiger and Dragon vowed “to enjoy his winning moments more.”

However, with the recent injury that he has suffered, this will be a major test of the confidence and optimism that he has displayed, playing for his new team this season. Fans hope he can bounce back and that his fighting spirit as Redcliffe’s star playmaker remains unaffected.

Chamber of Commerce Presents 20-Year Plan for Redcliffe Bayside Area

Man-made island and floating water park are some of the ideas for the peninsula.

Redcliffe Peninsula Chamber of Commerce presented its 20-year vision for the Redcliffe bayside in a bid to spark business and economic growth in the area.

The proposal made by the group includes creation of a state-of-the-art maritime precinct and an artificial island. The chamber revealed the draft Redcliffe Foreshore Masterplan and Activation Strategy before the Moreton Bay Regional Council on March 17. More than 100 people attended the presentation.

The chamber, which represents businesses in the bay area, promises to continue its discussion with the government and the community as it proceeds to the second phase of the plan. The group has been invited by the council to a second meeting on March 29.

The council expressed that it is already considering some of the plans, including the construction of a floating water park, on-water services and coffee carts. Other projects that will be undertaken include a shuttle bus service around Redcliffe Peninsula, maritime taxis, creation of dive sites and single-lane Redcliffe Jetty Markets.

Appeal for Economic Stimulation

The community has been clamouring for the activation of a marina space in Redcliffe. One of the requests is for the return of the car barge from Redcliffe to Moreton Island.

The chamber already found support for its plans from Luke Howarth, federal LNP MP for Petrie, and Yvette D’Ath, state Labor MP for Redcliffe. Ms D’Ath emphasised the importance of a long-term development plan to spur economic growth while protecting community culture and lifestyle.

Chamber board member Brad Flynn said that the community needs a stronger economic base to help small businesses grow. Recent statistics showed that the Redcliffe Peninsula lagged behind Newport in terms of employment, income, housing and education.

Mr Flynn stressed the need to grow the number of visitors to the bayside to stimulate business and employment in the area.
