Missing teeth and uncomfortable dentures can make eating, speaking and socialising difficult. At John Street Dental in Redcliffe, Dr Alvin Wong is helping patients explore All-on-X implant treatment, with IV sedation available for suitable patients undergoing complex dental procedures.
Feeling uncomfortable about your teeth is far from unusual. Research reported by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) has found that around one in three adults have felt uncomfortable about their dental appearance. That finding comes from earlier survey research, while more recent AIHW data shows that 25 per cent of Australians aged 15 and over who needed dental care delayed or missed it at least once in 2024–25.
For people who have lost most or all of their teeth, the choices can be difficult to navigate. Removable dentures are an established option, although some wearers experience problems with their fit or stability.
At John Street Dental, Dr Alvin Wong is helping patients consider another possibility: All-on-X (AOX), which uses dental implants to support a fixed arch of replacement teeth.
AOX is among the treatments the practice has added since new owners took over in May 2026, the year John Street Dental celebrates 50 years in Redcliffe.
From a Dental Clinic Near the Jetty to 50 Years on John St
John Street Dental began in 1976 when Dr Peter Houston opened P J Houston Dental in an arcade near Redcliffe Jetty.
The practice moved to 116 John St in 1992, occupying a converted four-bedroom brick house. Dr David Houston joined in 2009, continuing the family’s involvement.
New owners took over in May 2026, investing in technology and introducing additional treatments. The practice says many familiar staff members remain, maintaining connections with patients built over five decades.
What is All-On-X and who might benefit?
All-on-X may be considered for people who have lost most or all of their teeth, or whose remaining teeth cannot be saved. Unlike removable dentures, it uses implants placed in the jawbone to anchor a fixed set of replacement teeth.

At John Street Dental, treatment begins with a consultation and three-dimensional cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging to assess suitability and plan implant placement. The practice has both Cone Beam CT (CBCT) and Orthopantomogram (OPG) machines on-site, allowing patients to undergo these imaging procedures at the clinic without needing to visit an external radiology provider. Some patients may receive temporary fixed teeth on the day of surgery, with the final restoration fitted after healing.

Implant surgery carries risks, including infection, healing complications and implant failure. Treatment also involves substantial costs and ongoing maintenance. Medical history, oral health and available bone all influence suitability, so patients need to understand the risks, benefits and alternatives before deciding whether to proceed.
Meet Dr Alvin Wong
A University of Queensland dentistry graduate, Dr Alvin Wong spent seven years owning and operating two dental practices in regional New South Wales before returning to Brisbane in 2019.
His professional interests include dental implants, All-on-X and digital dentistry. He also mentors other dentists across Brisbane, sharing his experience in advanced dental treatments.

What about Dental Anxiety?
For some patients, the procedure itself is only part of the concern. Anxiety about visiting the dentist can be enough to keep them away for years.
John Street Dental offers IV sedation for suitable patients undergoing complex procedures, including AOX. Sedation specialists administer and monitor the medication while Dr Wong performs the dental treatment.
Patients undergo an assessment beforehand and receive information about the risks, additional costs and recovery requirements. IV sedation may help some people feel more relaxed, but it is not appropriate for everyone.
Cost can also discourage people from seeking care. AIHW figures for 2024–25 show that 16 per cent of Australians aged 15 and over who needed dental care delayed or missed it because of cost.
John Street Dental offers payment arrangements through Humm, Afterpay and Zip Money, subject to eligibility and provider terms. Patients considering implants should establish the full costs, including any additional procedures, before committing to treatment.

More than implant dentistry
The practice’s expanded services include individual dental implants, clear aligners, bridges, teeth whitening and same-day crowns, alongside general and preventive dental care.
An in-house milling machine allows suitable crowns to be made and fitted in one day, rather than requiring the usual wait for an external laboratory.
The clinic also treats eligible children under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule and accepts DVA Gold Cards for eligible services.
Preventive care remains important, particularly because tooth decay and gum disease can develop without obvious symptoms. Early assessment may identify problems before more extensive treatment becomes necessary.
Not every patient with missing teeth needs implants. John Street Dental encourages people who have delayed dental care to begin with an assessment, so they can understand their oral health and decide what treatment, if any, is appropriate.
