Margate Beach Park in Line for More Foreshore Upgrades

Margate Beach Park has been the focus of a continuing round of Council investment, with seven picnic shelters and the park’s public amenities identified for upgrades in City of Moreton Bay’s 2025–26 works program.

There is another foreshore shelter project in the new 2026–27 budget, although exactly how it relates to the earlier Margate Beach Park works is not yet clear from Council’s published information.

The previous program was substantial enough to include upgrades to seven picnic shelters, while the amenities component received $650,000 in Queensland Government funding through the South East Queensland Community Stimulus Program.

Seven Shelters and a $650k Amenities Upgrade

Council’s 2025–26 budget listed upgrades to the seven shelters and public amenities at Margate Beach Park among the key projects for Division 6.

The separate $650,000 government contribution applied specifically to the Margate Beach Park amenities upgrade, rather than the entire shelter and amenities program.

Margate Beach Park itself covers about 12,400 square metres along Margate Parade, according to Council planning documents. Its facilities include sheltered picnic tables, electric barbecues, toilets and showers, fitness equipment and seating.

Council’s current Margate Beach Park information also lists beach access, parking and a water fountain, while a wheelchair-friendly boardwalk runs along the beachfront.

What We Know About the Next Round

Council’s 2026–27 budget again lists picnic shelter renewal among the key projects for Division 6.

There is an important wrinkle in the wording. The budget describes the project as the “renewal of picnic shelters at Suttons Beach Park, Margate”.

Council’s own park directory, however, lists Suttons Beach Park on Marine Parade in Redcliffe and Margate Beach Park on Margate Parade in Margate. Council planning material also treats Suttons Beach and Margate Beach as separate parks within the same wider foreshore precinct.

That makes it unclear from the budget information alone whether the 2026–27 shelter renewal is a continuation of the Margate Beach Park program, work at neighbouring Suttons Beach, or simply an inconsistency in the location used in the budget.

Council has not provided, in the published budget information, a shelter count, individual project cost or construction timetable for the 2026–27 renewal.

What is clear is that investment along this stretch of the Peninsula foreshore is continuing.

City of Moreton Bay has allocated $454 million to capital works citywide in 2026–27. Division 6 projects include the shelter renewal, a new section of the Moreton Bay Cycleway between Youngs Street and Bells Creek at Clontarf, and the much larger Suttons Beach Pavilion redevelopment in Redcliffe.

The pavilion is a separate project and reached another milestone in August, when 160 cubic metres of concrete was poured for the new building’s ground-floor slab. Council expects the pavilion structure to be completed around mid-2027, weather permitting.

For Margate Beach Park, the seven-shelter and amenities program provides the clearest picture of the improvements already committed to the park. Whether the shelter renewal appearing in the latest budget represents the next stage of that work should become clearer as Council releases further project details.
