A food outlet in Margate is providing Redcliffe Peninsula households with access to discounted groceries, free food assistance and everyday essentials, offering an alternative for residents struggling to meet their weekly shopping costs.
Kingdom Makers Food Outlet operates at 251 Oxley Avenue, having moved from North Lakes in late 2025. Although the not-for-profit service has been established for several years, its operators say many residents remain unaware of the affordable groceries and assistance available at its Margate premises.
Everyone can shop at the outlet without becoming a member. A one-off $3 membership provides additional benefits, including access to free bread and fresh produce when available with a purchase. Residents experiencing more immediate financial hardship may also be able to obtain short-term emergency food hampers.
Grocery savings ease pressure on families
The outlet serves people facing different financial circumstances, from parents managing household expenses to older residents and those experiencing unemployment or homelessness.
Senior Pastor Alexia Fruean, who helps run the food service, has described customers arriving with very different needs. Some are seeking basic assistance during difficult circumstances, while others are working parents looking for affordable meat and bulk groceries to make their money go further.
A volunteer recalled a mother of seven who was able to use money saved on groceries for an outing with her children. Lower food expenses had allowed the family to spend on something beyond everyday necessities.
Food affordability remains a widespread concern. According to Foodbank Queensland’s 2025 research, approximately 480,000 Queensland households, or 22 per cent, experienced food insecurity during the preceding 12 months.
Food rescue partnerships keep shelves stocked
Kingdom Makers receives support from Foodbank Queensland, SecondBite and Twin Rivers Community Care, helping it obtain bread, fresh produce and essential groceries for distribution through its community outlet.
The partnerships allow suitable surplus food to reach households rather than go to waste, although the range of available products can change depending on supply.
The organisation’s move to larger premises in Margate has also provided additional room for food storage and distribution. In its Australian Communities Foundation profile, Kingdom Makers outlined plans for improved refrigeration, freezer storage and other facilities to make greater use of the warehouse.
Volunteers help keep the service running
Staff and volunteers manage the outlet’s daily operations, from stocking shelves to assisting customers and organising groceries.
The organisation also works with employment and training providers to offer volunteering opportunities for people seeking practical experience, confidence and community connections. Foodbank has documented how volunteering at the outlet has helped participants develop skills and rebuild their confidence.
Kingdom Makers began operating its food outlet in North Lakes in March 2023 before relocating to Margate. The service forms part of the community outreach activities of Kingdom Makers, a Christian organisation led by Pastors Jerry and Alexia Fruean.
