The devastating weekend blaze in Clontarf has united the local area in grief and action. Police have alleged that a thirty-six-year-old man used petrol as an accelerant to set fire to a Weaber Street home while three people known to him were still inside.

Following an immediate arrest by a dog squad unit, authorities upgraded the initial domestic violence arson charges to include three counts of attempted murder alongside further arson offences.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on June 1 while the community turns its full attention toward helping the victims survive the immediate aftermath.

The targeted house belonged to a local couple who managed to escape the flames with moments to spare. For this family, the destruction of their house represents a deeper level of grief because it was the home where their teenage son grew up before he was tragically killed six years ago.

The fire consumed everything they owned, including the business trucks and tools they used to run their local gardening company, alongside the urn containing their late son’s ashes, which is feared lost. Relative members described the incident as an immeasurable loss that has forced the parents to rebuild their lives from absolute scratch while dealing with renewed personal trauma.

The fast-moving fire quickly spread past property lines, leaving two neighbouring families entirely homeless as well. One house belonged to a hardworking couple with six children who lost all their worldly possessions in the inferno.

The family escaped with only the clothes they were wearing and their pet dog, whom the father managed to save by running back inside the burning structure just before it became unliveable. Next door, a young couple also watched their home burn down just months after moving out on their own for the very first time.

In the face of total ruin, the affected residents have shown remarkable resilience and care for the community. Shortly after losing their first home, the young couple visited the local fire brigade to hand-deliver a thank-you hamper to the emergency crews who fought the blaze. Meanwhile, local residents and relatives have established online fundraising campaigns to secure temporary housing and everyday essentials for the victims.

The local state member of parliament has publicly urged the peninsula to stand firmly behind the three families, and local generosity has already generated tens of thousands of dollars to help the residents find stability.
