Redcliffe Pink Snapdragons are making room for new paddlers in Kippa-Ring, inviting breast cancer survivors and supporters to experience dragon boating as the club marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The free Come and Try Morning will take place on Saturday, 17 October, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Paddling Den in Talobilla Park. People currently undergoing breast cancer treatment, those living beyond the disease and supporters are welcome, with no previous paddling experience or particular fitness level required.

Paddles and life jackets are provided by the club, while morning tea afterwards will allow newcomers to meet the existing crew. Registration is essential.

A Crew Brought Together By Shared Experience

Founded in 2005, the Redcliffe Pink Snapdragons have spent more than two decades bringing breast cancer survivors and supporters together through dragon boating on Moreton Bay. The not-for-profit club attracts members from across the Redcliffe Peninsula and surrounding areas, with twice-weekly training sessions and participation in regattas and awareness activities. It is part of the national Dragons Abreast Australia network, where the group is known as DA Moreton Bay.

The club describes paddling as a way for members to rebuild confidence, maintain physical activity and develop friendships with others affected by breast cancer. Members are encouraged to participate at their own pace, whether through social paddling or training for competitions. Five members recently took their paddling experience overseas, joining thousands of others at the 2026 International Breast Cancer Paddlers’ Commission Participatory Dragon Boat Festival in Aix-les-Bains, France.

Lisa and Sonia paddled with Coastal Breast BCS Team 73, Anne joined Coastal Breast Supporter Team 6, while Jhana and Michelle were part of Dragons Abreast Australia’s Team Unity 104. The non-competitive festival brought together around 4,500 breast cancer paddlers and supporters from 25 countries. The Redcliffe members’ participation followed two years of planning, training and fundraising.

From Moreton Bay To The Next Big Paddle

Closer to home, the club’s October activities began with a fundraising and awareness stall at Redcliffe Markets on 4 October. A Pink October raffle will also be drawn on Saturday, 24 October, with five major prizes and tickets available at three for $5, seven for $10 or 15 for $20.

The same day, the Pink Snapdragons and Redcliffe Red Dragons are planning a Sunset Paddle from 6 p.m. through Newport’s canals, with a possible extension into Moreton Bay. The paddle and accompanying Pink October BBQ are restricted to members and families, with the combined event listed from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. and tickets priced at $5.

The club is also working towards sending a breast cancer survivor team to the Australian Dragon Boat Championships in Adelaide in April 2027, followed by a longer-term goal of participating in the 2030 international festival in Singapore.

Fundraising and sponsorship are being sought to support those plans, including financial contributions, equipment, services and assistance with travel and accommodation. Club and participation enquiries can be directed to info@pinksnapdragons.com or Jhana on 0417 716 544.
