Kayo Stadium to Host Brisbane Roar Match Following Suncorp Stadium Concerns

Brisbane Roar has relocated its February 28 A-League Men’s match against Perth Glory from Milton’s Suncorp Stadium to Kayo Stadium in Redcliffe after authorities determined the playing surface would not recover sufficiently following an intensive February concert season.

Suncorp Stadium management approached the club to discuss the relocation decision due to shortened recovery time after hosting the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo and other major events where patrons and performers require field access. A rugby match scheduled for the evening before the original fixture date added further strain to the surface, with substantial turf replacement required in a compressed timeframe.

The venue relocation announcement comes despite Suncorp Stadium’s confidence the field will be safe and playable for the Queensland Reds match. However, authorities acknowledged from previous feedback that the cosmetic appearance and reduced grass coverage resulting from extended flooring coverage can impact A-League matches more significantly than other football codes.

Kayo Stadium Steps In for Redcliffe Match

After discussions between Brisbane Roar, Suncorp Stadium, Kayo Stadium, the Australian Professional Leagues and Perth Glory, the clubs agreed to proactively relocate the match as the most appropriate course of action. Maintaining pitch quality in line with A-League standards, and meeting player and fan expectations, was central to the decision.

Kayo Stadium in Kippa-Ring has capacity for approximately 10,000 spectators and previously served as Brisbane Roar’s home venue from the 2020-21 season through 2023-24, when the club reduced operational costs by ending its Suncorp Stadium lease. The Redcliffe venue features grandstand seating for 8,975 spectators, 445 corporate seats and standing room, with modern facilities including broadcast-grade lighting installed in 2023.

The stadium is owned by the Redcliffe Dolphins Rugby League Club and serves as home ground for the Dolphins NRL team and Redcliffe Dolphins Queensland Cup side. Brisbane Roar returned to Suncorp Stadium for men’s matches in the 2023-24 season after three years at the Redcliffe base, though announced in September 2025 it would play three home games at Kayo Stadium during the 2025-26 season.

Access and Ticket Information

Brisbane Roar will contact supporters who purchased tickets for the Suncorp Stadium match directly about refund arrangements. Members will also receive details on how to access the relocated fixture at Kayo Stadium in Redcliffe.

Tickets for the Redcliffe match went on sale at 1pm on Monday, 9 February, through the club’s official ticketing channels.

The club apologised to members and fans for any inconvenience caused by the venue change, noting it worked to reach the best possible outcome under the circumstances and appreciates the understanding and continued support of the Roar community.

Kayo Stadium is located at Klingner Road and Ashmole Road in Kippa-Ring, accessible by car or public transport. Kippa-Ring Station on the Redcliffe Peninsula Line sits approximately 2.2 kilometers from the venue, with bus routes 690, 696, 698 and 699 providing connections from the station to stops near the stadium.

Local Star Sharn Freier Returns to Brisbane Roar After European Stint

Redcliffe’s own Sharn Freier has returned to familiar territory, rejoining Brisbane Roar on loan from German powerhouse VfL Wolfsburg for the upcoming 2025-26 Ninja A-League Women season.

The 24-year-old striker, who grew up in the Moreton Bay region and attended Pine Rivers State High School, will pull on the orange jersey once again after an impressive European adventure that saw her establish herself as a regular in the Australian national team.

Freier’s journey from local football fields to international recognition has been remarkable. Starting her career at Pine Rivers United alongside her twin sister Laini, she progressed through the ranks at Moreton Bay United (now known as Moreton City Excelsior) before making her mark with Brisbane Roar.

Her breakthrough came during the 2023-24 season, where she featured in all 22 matches for the Roar, primarily operating from the left wing position. That campaign yielded two goals and five assists, performances that caught the attention of national team selectors and earned her a maiden call-up to the Matildas.

Since making her international debut against Mexico in April 2024, Freier has accumulated nine caps for Australia and found the net twice. Her international career includes appearances at the Paris 2024 Olympics, marking her as one of the rising stars in Australian women’s football.

The forward’s European experience at VfL Wolfsburg, where she signed in January 2025, has added another dimension to her game. The German club noted her usual deployment on the left flank and her Olympic tournament experience when announcing her arrival.

Brisbane Roar head coach Alex Smith expressed his delight at securing Freier’s return, highlighting her ability to take on defenders and create opportunities as qualities that align with the club’s playing philosophy. The coach emphasised how her skillset resonates with the Roar faithful and fits perfectly with their tactical approach.

For Freier, the homecoming represents more than just a football decision. Having started her journey at Pine Rivers United before moving through various local clubs including The Gap FC, her connection to the Brisbane football community runs deep.

The 2024-25 season was cut short for Freier due to an ankle injury that limited her to 11 appearances, during which she managed two goals and four assists. The injury also ruled her out of international fixtures including the SheBelieves Cup and friendlies against South Korea.

Her twin sister Laini, who is 24 minutes older and followed a similar career path, recently announced her retirement from professional football after also earning her first Matildas cap this year. Laini cited her recent marriage as a factor in her decision to move on from competitive football.

The 2025-26 A-League Women season is scheduled to commence on 31 October 2025, giving Freier time to fully recover from her injury and prepare for another campaign with her hometown club.

Freier’s return adds significant attacking firepower to Brisbane Roar’s squad as they prepare for the upcoming season. With her combination of local knowledge, international experience, and European exposure, she represents exactly the type of player who can make an impact in the A-League Women competition.

The loan arrangement with VfL Wolfsburg provides Brisbane Roar with a proven performer while allowing Freier to continue her development in familiar surroundings. For the local football community, particularly in the Redcliffe and Moreton Bay areas, her homecoming serves as an inspiring example of how talent can flourish from grassroots beginnings to the world stage.

Matildas vs Germany

Germany’s victory came through goals from Marina Hegering (24’), Lea Schuller (64’), and Jule Brand (68’). The German side demonstrated a solid set-piece strategy, limiting the Matildas’ opportunities throughout the match and scoring two of their own via corners.

Despite equal possession, Germany outshot Australia significantly, putting 4 of 17 attempts on target compared to the Tillies’ 2 of 8.

Redcliffe PCYC’s Cortnee Vine featured in the match, playing for 58 minutes before being substituted. The Victoria-born winger, who recently secured a move to North Carolina Courage in the National Women’s Soccer League, showed flashes of the form that saw her contribute 10 goals and 6 assists for Sydney FC last season—averaging a whopping 1.02 goal contributions per 90 minutes.

Goalkeeper Teagan Micah sat behind Matildas regular Mackenzie Arnold. The Redcliffe State High School alumna is fresh off a season with Liverpool in the Women’s Super League where she maintained three clean sheets in seven appearances.

Olympics outlook

The 3-0 loss places Australia in a challenging position early in the tournament. Australia’s next match is on Monday, 29 July against Zambia, followed by their final group stage game against the powerhouse USA on Thursday, 1 August. Both matches are scheduled at 3:00 a.m. AEST.

Teagan Micah Takes Next Step with Liverpool in the Women’s Super League

Liverpool FC Women have signed Redcliffe State High School alumna and Australian international goalkeeper Teagan Micah to strengthen their squad ahead of the 2023-24 English Women’s Super League (WSL) season. The 25-year-old will now be tested in one of the top women’s leagues as the Reds’ new shot-stopper.

Teagan Micah at FC Rosengård

Micah joins Liverpool after two successful seasons with FC Rosengård in Sweden. There, she won back-to-back Damallsvenskan titles and the Swedish Women’s Cup. She helped Rosengård to the groups of the 2023 Women’s Champions League with solid goalkeeping in the qualifying rounds.

The keeper has 14 caps for the Matildas including an appearance at the 2019 Women’s World Cup. Earlier this year, she overcame a serious concussion to return to football in time for the Matildas’ World Cup campaign.

At Liverpool, Micah will be battling for the No.1 spot as they look to build on their first season back in the WSL following promotion in 2022. The Reds impressed in their opening game last season, beating defending champions Chelsea. However, they finished in 7th place, well out of contention for a European spot.

Liverpool FC is a historic football club – England’s most successful in Europe – but are still building their women’s side to compete with the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal.

Ambitions at new club

Micah expressed her excitement at joining Liverpool, citing the club’s history and stature. She also cited the high level of competition in the WSL as a key factor in her decision.

The Australian keeper was clear about her ambitions at Liverpool, saying she hopes to help the club qualify for the UEFA Women’s Champions League in the coming years.

Liverpool are currently preparing for the 2023-24 campaign, with ongoing pre-season fixtures including the AMOS Women’s French Cup against Paris Saint-Germain on August 28. Their league opener against Arsenal on October 1 will give Micah the chance to come up against Matildas teammates Steph Catley and Caitlin Foord.

Joining the up-and-coming WSL side is the latest impressive step in Micah’s career progression.
