The proposed aquatic facilities, designed by Elevation Architecture, aim to enhance the school’s physical education program and provide valuable water safety skills to its students.

The Proposal

The school has lodged an application to construct:

  • A six-lane, 25-metre pool
  • A 5m x 10m Learn to Swim Pool
  • Change rooms and a pool equipment area
  • Extensions to existing amenities

These new facilities are set to replace the current staff carpark, which consists of 13 spaces in the northwestern corner of the school grounds at 16-38 Maine Road, Clontarf.

Design and Safety Features

The main 25-metre pool will feature six lanes, a ramp for accessibility, and a shade cloth cover to protect swimmers from the sun. Adjacent to this, a Learn to Swim pool will be constructed, complete with a roofed structure and manually openable transparent blinds, providing a controlled environment for beginner swimmers.

Safety is a top priority in the design. A compliant pool fence will separate the pool area from the neighbouring Dalton Park. Furthermore, the existing driveway crossover will be removed and replaced with landscaping, with the kerb and channel being reinstated. These changes are expected to improve pedestrian safety by eliminating vehicle movements across the footpath.

The planners have taken care to ensure the new facilities blend seamlessly with the existing streetscape. “Facing Maine Road, the new learn to swim pool, pump room and store have been architecturally treated and set behind a landscaped buffer,” the planning documents state. “The built form is not visually dominant or overbearing with respect to Dalton Park and the Maine Road streetscape.”

It’s important to note that, according to the application, the pool facilities are intended for the use of school students only. This focus ensures that the primary beneficiaries of this development will be the young learners at Grace Lutheran Primary School.
