Suttons Beach Pavilion to Get a New Look with National Architectural Design Competition

The much-loved Suttons Beach Pavilion is set to undergo a remarkable transformation, following the announcement of a national architectural design competition aimed at breathing new life into this charming waterfront location from the 1930s.

The Suttons Beach Pavilion, a historical Art Deco structure that has long been cherished by the community, was recently shrouded in construction fencing. A comprehensive report deemed it beyond repair and too costly to salvage.

Consequently, the Moreton Bay City Council has made the bold decision to replace the dilapidated pavilion with a cutting-edge design that will redefine the area.

Embracing Architectural Excellence

This ambitious project has drawn inspiration from iconic structures around the world, such as the Eiffel Tower, Sydney Opera House, and Washington’s White House, which were brought to life through architectural design competitions.

Now, Australia’s finest architects are invited to participate in a national competition to design a new building that will stand in place of the deteriorating Suttons Beach Pavilion.

Envisioning the Future of Suttons Beach

Mayor Peter Flannery expressed his vision for the project, emphasising that the winning design will go beyond just replacing the existing structure. It will encompass a comprehensive plan to enhance the entire waterfront site, including provisions for restaurants, a rooftop public space, and shower and toilet facilities.

The council is committed to preserving as many historical materials as possible to retain a sense of the area’s rich heritage.

“We understand the significance of the previous Suttons Beach Pavilion to the local community, and the new building design will consider the history of the site, as well as extensive community feedback,” said Mayor Flannery.

Community Involvement and Expert Guidance

Residents had the opportunity to contribute their ideas for the replacement building’s design and style during March and April. These valuable suggestions are expected to shape the design brief for the competition.

The Moreton City Council has engaged the Australian Institute of Architects to ensure that industry best practices are followed throughout the competition. The institute’s endorsement will further solidify the competition guidelines and model.

A Project with a Timeline

The architectural design competition will officially launch in mid-November 2023, with the hope of having a shortlist of architects ready to compete in the second stage by early 2024. The winning design will be announced by July 2024.

Suttons Beach Pavilion Preservation Group secretary Karen Whittam expressed excitement and positivity within the community, noting that the contest signifies a significant step towards rejuvenating the Suttons Beach precinct. She also pointed out that the council’s investment in top architects will contribute to the project’s success.

As the vision for Suttons Beach takes shape, it promises to bring new opportunities for employment and economic development to the area. The precinct is an integral part of the Redcliffe Peninsula’s tourism offering, and its revitalisation will ensure that the City of Moreton Bay remains an attractive place to live, work, visit, and invest in the future.

Redcliffe Set to Host the Biggest Brisbane Convoy for Kids 2023

Brisbane Convoy for Kids is set to return to Redcliffe, promising an extraordinary day of fundraising for its beneficiary, children’s hospice Hummingbird House, with truck drivers (and members of the public!) bidding for the honour to be the lead truck in the convoy.

The Convoy, starting its journey from Larapinta and concluding in Redcliffe, has been steadily gaining traction with more and more truck drivers expressing interest in the coveted top 20 shootout.

In 2022, this event generated a commendable $15,000, allowing truck drivers to engage in a spirited bidding war for the lead truck position, creating a palpable sense of competition.

This year’s event, anticipated to be the most substantial and vibrant yet, is set for Saturday, 4 Nov 2023.

“Brisbane Convoy for Kids is growing every year,” Dana Browne, the Publicity Officer for Brisbane Convoy for Kids, said. “We are continually blown away by the sheer numbers we receive when registering trucks. A key difference this year is the unbelievable amount of interest we have received for our top 20 shootouts.”

“The top 20 shootout is where the truck drivers can register themselves to basically go into a bidding war to be the lead truck. It is a highly sought-after position with last year’s top 20 shootout bringing in around $15,000.

“Last year, we introduced the ‘sponsor bid’ option, where a member of the public could donate a bid to whichever truck they wanted to see in the top 20 – namely as the lead truck – and this year, we have seen the sponsor bid option become bigger and better than we had imagined possible.”

Family Fun Day in Redcliffe

Once the impressive convoy of trucks reaches Redcliffe, the excitement continues with a lively day at the Redcliffe Showgrounds. The event promises to be a truck enthusiast’s paradise with a dazzling array of trucks on display, ranging from meticulously polished showpieces to rugged workhorses, each a testament to the dedication of their drivers.

“There will be lots and lots of trucks (at the Showgrounds). From big to small, pristine and polished to absolute workhorses. The hours the drivers put in to make sure their trucks look exactly how they want it to look is crazy; blinged out, bright lights, loud horns. We really have it all when it comes to the rigs,” Ms Browne added.

The Redcliffe Showgrounds will not only cater to truck lovers but also transform into a delightful family fun day. Attendees can look forward to free amusement rides and an animal nursery, creating an atmosphere of joy and wonder. Market stalls, food trucks, coffee vans, and various displays will keep visitors entertained and well-fed throughout the day.

As the sun sets, the main stage at the Redcliffe Showgrounds will come alive, led by the charismatic Eric Summons. The highlight of the evening is the performance by the renowned country artist, Adam Harvey, scheduled to take the stage immediately after the 7:10 p.m. fireworks display.

“Throughout the day, we will have our much-loved auction – all items for sale are donated, and all proceeds will go to our beneficiary – Hummingbird House,” Ms Browne said.

“The passion within this organisation is immeasurable. From our volunteers to our sponsors, our participants, and our members – the passion runs deep, and it is all for the kids. Being able to support organisations like Hummingbird House makes all the hard work worth it. Our donations are increasing every year.”

Show Your Support For Redcliffe Hospital on Giving Day

Have you or a loved one ever received a new lease on life at Redcliffe Hospital? On October 12, you can give back to the place that has given so much to this community through the Redcliffe Hospital Giving Day.

Read: Be Part of Redcliffe Giving Day 2023 and Help Double the Difference

The Redcliffe Hospital Giving Day is a chance to support the doctors, nurses, and staff who provide excellent care every day. Your donation will directly help the facility improve equipment, resources, and services for local patients. Funds raised on Giving Day will go towards bringing new and cutting-edge technology to the hospital.

Redcliffe Hospital Giving Day is the flagship event for Raise it for Redcliffe Hospital, a joint effort between the RBWH Foundation and Redcliffe Hospital to raise funds. On this special day, all donations to Redcliffe Hospital will be matched by Giving Day Impact Partners, doubling the impact of each contribution.

Far more than a hospital, Redcliffe is the heartbeat of the entire Moreton Bay region. Its caring staff have guided countless babies into the world, healed families in their times of greatest need, and walked hand-in-hand with patients facing the unknown.

For local nurse Kerbi Davis, who is now a Nurse Manager at the hospital, Redcliffe was her rock and refuge. After 10 years at the hospital she considered family, Ms Davis was diagnosed with breast cancer at only 28.

Throughout her treatment, the staff supported her with a kindness she will never forget. And miraculously, just months after finishing chemotherapy, she found out she was pregnant.

When it came time to decide where to deliver her baby, there was really only one option that made sense to her – Redcliffe Hospital. She had complete confidence that the hospital’s staff and facilities would provide the best possible birthing experience for her and her baby.

She chose Metro North Health, the public health district that includes Redcliffe, as her provider network.

According to Ms Davis, being diagnosed with cancer at such a young age meant fertility was a huge worry. She considered it miraculous that she was able to conceive naturally despite her condition.

Ms Davis was met with yet another miracle when her baby Finn was only 3 months old – a clear PET scan showing no cancer recurrence.

With her second chance cradled in her arms, it was only natural Ms Davis returned to Redcliffe for care as she stepped into motherhood. The hospital was right by her side, welcoming the new life they had helped save.

This Giving Day, Ms Davis urges the community to give as Redcliffe gave to her – with generosity, compassion, and dedication. Your donation will help the hospital continue providing its life-changing care, whilst expressing your gratitude.

Spectacular Blubber Jellyfish Swarm Amazes Woody Point Resident

A breathtaking natural phenomenon left Woody Point resident Robert Webber in awe during his daily morning stroll. The serene coastal town witnessed the arrival of an astonishing number of blubber jellyfish, creating a mesmerising spectacle along the jetty area.

Having relocated to Woody Point in the spring of 2022, Mr. Webber was no stranger to the beauty of the area’s coastline. However, the sight of hundreds, if not thousands, of blubber jellyfish congregating near the jetty, at around 9:00 a.m. on 27 Sept 2023, was unlike anything he had ever seen before.

As the jellyfish bloom drifted gracefully in the tranquil waters, Mr. Webber seized the opportunity to capture this stunning display with his camera, sharing the remarkable images with the local community.

“We’re new to the area but have never seen anything like this before,” Mr. Webber exclaimed, clearly captivated by the sight. His awe-inspiring photographs quickly garnered attention on social media platforms, drawing admirers and sparking curiosity about the blubber jellyfish.

Blubber jellyfish, scientifically known as Catostylus mosaicus and commonly referred to as blue bluffer jellyfish, are native to Australia’s east coast. While it is not uncommon to spot these jellyfish in the waters, witnessing such a large gathering is a rare and enchanting experience.

The blubber jellyfish’s sting is known to be painful but generally poses no serious risk to humans. Their tentacles are equipped with specialized cells called nematocysts, which contain tiny harpoon-like structures used for capturing prey and deterring potential threats. While a blubber jellyfish’s sting can be uncomfortable, it is not considered life-threatening to humans and typically results in mild irritation.

Local marine experts are intrigued by the congregation of blubber jellyfish in such large numbers. While the exact cause of this phenomenon remains uncertain, factors such as water temperature, current patterns, and the availability of prey are believed to influence their movement and clustering behavior.

Redcliffe-Based ROPE TV Uplifts People With Disabilities

ROPE TV, a community television show produced in Redcliffe by disability service provider ROPE, is giving people with disabilities the chance to work in media and a platform to share their stories.

ROPE TV, filmed and produced by video production company Trending Media Australia, releases new episodes on the first Monday of each month.

The participant-led show is the first of its kind in Australia. Regular hosts Ashley Pickering and Cale Buzza interview guests on topics of interest to the local community.

They regularly feature inspiring organisations that enrich people’s lives through music.

One such group is Team Musicare, which provides musical programs for people with disabilities. Their efforts highlight how music can uplift and empower.

The TV show also showcases up-and-coming talents. In one episode, they presented 12-year-old electric guitarist JayBird, who lives with ADHD and autism. Her impressive skills and passion for music defied her young age and challenges.

Another standout feature was 15-year-old singer and saxophonist LeviX from Brisbane. His versatility across genres like jazz, rock and pop was showcased. Earlier this year, LeviX wowed judges on The Voice Australia 2023, with Jason Derulo and Rita Ora turning their chairs for him.

They also featured young rapper MC Wheels, who has a rare condition called Spinal Muscular Atrophy with Respiratory Distress Type 1 (SMARD 1) that severely limits his mobility. In an interview with hosts Ashley and Cale, MC Wheels shared his challenging life story and undefeated spirit.

From time to time, ROPE TV also covers lighthearted stories. One episode followed roving reporter Brandon Johns as he swam with seals and visited the turtle day spa at Sea Life Sunshine Coast.

Some of their recent interviewees include Broncos legend Petero Civoniceva, National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) Minister Bill Shorten, local MP Yvette D’Ath, and ABC radio host Loretta Ryan who shared what it’s like behind the scenes.

According to ROPE CEO Wes Bleakley, the show provides unique opportunities for people with disabilities that are not offered anywhere else in the disability sector in Australia. He explains that the show is not just about disability – it can tackle any topic relevant to the local community.

Co-host Cale Buzza says his experience on ROPE TV has allowed him to meet high-profile people and see the show evolve over time. He notes that as the years go by, the show continues to become more and more interesting.

ROPE TV recently produced a documentary about the program called AbiliTV and entered it into the Focus on Ability Short Film Festival, which challenges filmmakers to showcase the abilities of people with disabilities.

Director Jesse Ellis says creating the AbiliTV documentary was a chance to highlight the impact of the TV show. Cale’s mother was even interviewed for the documentary, explaining Cale’s disability and his morning routine.

The Focus on Ability winners will be announced on 5 November 2023. But whatever the outcome, ROPE TV is already achieving its goal of uplifting voices, showcasing ability, and bringing the community together.

Be Part of Redcliffe Giving Day 2023 and Help Double the Difference

Did you know that generous Raise it for Redcliffe Hospital partners will be doubling all donations received between 1 September and 12 October 2023 as part of the annual Redcliffe Giving Day fundraising initiative?

Giving Day is an annual fundraising event for Raise it for Redcliffe Hospital, organised by Redcliffe Hospital in partnership with RBWH Foundation. Funds raised will help support the hospital’s patient care, health research, staff wellbeing and other healthcare initiatives.

In 2022, a research study was partly funded by the Giving Day. The initiative, which aimed at helping hospital patients who will undergo surgeries make healthy pre-operative lifestyle changes, was overseen by Senior Dietitian Alyce Nissen. Particularly, the study sought to reduce smoking and alcohol consumption whilst enhancing nutrition and addressing iron deficiency concerns.

“The key will be to empower patients by allowing them to complete a self-generated screening survey and then take ownership of the recommendations,” said Ms Nissen.

Police dogs tracked the male driver of an allegedly stolen Holden Commodore to a drain 4 km away from the scene of a tragic collision that occurred in Kippa-Ring, involving said car and a Suzuki Swift carrying two women, one of whom died at the scene.

Emergency services promptly responded to the scene at the junction of Anzac Avenue and Oleander Street in Kippa-Ring, following reports of the collision that occurred at approximately 6:53 a.m. on Friday, 22 Sept 2023. .
