Redcliffe Shopper Took 3 Weeks to Discover $1 Million Windfall

This Redcliffe shopper’s life took an unexpected turn when he finally discovered, three weeks after the draw, that he had just turned $1 million richer.

It took three weeks before the lucky shopper decided to check his ticket and they were elated to discover that the Aug 23 draw had made him a millionaire!

The winning ticket held the only division one prize nationally for that Gold draw. It was purchased at Midway News, located at Shop 2, 544 Oxley Avenue in Redcliffe. The Lott officials, however, have no way of directly notifying the lucky winner as the winning ticket was not registered to a player card.

How the winner plans to spend the windfall will remain a mystery as the lucky winner has chosen to remain anonymous to celebrate their newfound wealth in private.

Midway News owner, Deepak Rawat, expressed his elation at selling the winning ticket. He said, “We couldn’t believe the news when we found out we’d sold a division one winning entry in a recent Monday & Wednesday Lotto draw. It’s a good feeling to sell a division one winning ticket, and our customers have been so happy to hear the winning news when they visit us in-store.”

“On behalf of the entire Midway News team, we wish our winner all the best with their prize and hope their dreams come true.”

The Lott spokesperson Anna Hobdell commented on the winner’s good fortune, saying, “While we don’t know how they’ll celebrate their extraordinary prize, there’s no doubt their head was spinning when they realised they’d receive $1 million in their bank account this September.” She added, “However our winner chooses to use their prize, we hope they enjoy their winning feeling as long as they can!”

The winning numbers on Monday & Wednesday Gold Lotto draw 4315 on Wednesday, 23 August 2023, were 13, 9, 14, 7, 20, and 30, with supplementary numbers 33 and 27.

Redcliffe State High School Musicians Excel at QLD Youth Music Awards 2023

Students from Redcliffe State High School showcased their talents, with back to back awards for the String Orchestra and the Chamber Strings at the prestigious Queensland Youth Music Awards 2023.

The school sent 35 students to compete in a field of over 4,000 young participants and the outcome was nothing short of exceptional.

The Redcliffe State High School String Orchestra secured the coveted Gold Award and ranked second in their division. Meanwhile, the Redcliffe State High School Chamber Strings received a well-deserved Silver Award.

Brylee Taylor, Head of the Creative Industries Department at Redcliffe SHS, expressed immense pride in the students’ achievements. She noted that what sets this win apart is that Redcliffe SHS was the sole state school in QYMA 2023.

Emily Ashton, the school’s dedicated string tutor, received special recognition from the adjudicator for her original composition, “A Well-Watered Garden,” which was expertly performed by the students. This recognition underscores the school’s commitment to nurturing musical talent.

Their mentors lauded the students who, according to them, are no strangers to hard work, dedicating an hour each week to practice. Some students are even part of multiple ensembles, showcasing their remarkable commitment and work ethic.

Redcliffe SHS has highly qualified educators and state-of-the-art facilities, creating a conducive environment for young musicians to thrive. Currently, over 120 students participate in the Instrumental Music Program across various ensembles.

Redcliffe Residents Outraged as Historic Trees Face the Axe

Redcliffe locals are up in arms over what they consider a heartless decision to remove some Moreton Bay fig trees that have graced Prince Edward Parade for over half a century.

Affectionately known as the “Cathedral Fig Walk,” the canopy of trees has been a source of local pride and a beloved fixture on the oceanside road. Many residents considered the Moreton Bay fig trees iconic, lending character to the area’s landscape over the years.

That’s why the decision to remove the trees, reportedly made to address concerns about power line interference, has sparked outrage in the community.

One local resident expressed his frustration, labelling the decision “a disgrace.” He took to social media to voice his concerns.

“These Moreton Bay Figs are an icon for Redcliffe Parade, and without notice, the council or energy company are butchering the tree arbour and our icon,” the resident posted in a private Facebook group. “Before we know it, there will be nothing left. It’s time to stop this butchering and vandalism!”

The sentiment was widely shared among the community, with many residents expressing sadness at the loss of the “beautiful” trees and questioning the necessity of their removal.

“A shame, some idiot thought it was a good idea. They were beautiful,” one resident commented, while another deemed it “a very poor decision.”

In the comments section of a photo posted on a local Facebook group, some residents speculated that the decision might have been made for safety reasons due to powerline interference. However, the poster remained critical, suggesting that alternative solutions, such as burying power lines underground, should be explored to preserve the beloved fig trees.

In response to the backlash, the Moreton Bay Council offered a statement but did not explicitly confirm the reasons for the trees’ removal. They did, however, assert their commitment to not maintaining trees that posed a risk to power lines.

“If further trimming is required once the tree has been trimmed away from the power lines or phone lines, please contact council,” a spokesperson stated.

“When something like this happens, you struggle to believe it!” she exclaimed, still in disbelief after receiving a call from an official at The Lott confirming her win.

Her winning ticket, a $5 Cash Path Instant Scratch-Its, was purchased at The Lucky Charm Redcliffe, located at Shop 7B, Bluewater Square Shopping Centre, 20 Anzac Avenue, Redcliffe.

“I just keep thinking, ‘Oh my god, am I the luckiest person in Australia?'”

“My kids and I are still gobsmacked,” she shared.

“None of us can believe that this has happened, but we’re all so grateful. I’m going to share it with them, and it’s going to be such a help for us all given how expensive things are getting now.”

Additionally, she intends to set aside a portion of the prize money for added financial security.

“It’s just wonderful to know I can put a little bit away and I can have some security moving forward,” she explained.

For this lucky Redcliffe resident, the $10,000 windfall was more than just a financial blessing; it was a reminder of the joy that comes from a simple scratch.

Local Youth Star and World Cup Heroine Cortnee Vine Stays Loyal to Domestic Football

The incredible journey of Cortnee Vine has taken her from the youth ranks of Redcliffe’s Peninsula Power FC to World Cup stardom. But despite her international fame at this year’s World Cup, the local junior star has decided to remain with Sydney FC and continue to promote the domestic game.

Humble beginnings with Peninsula Power FC

Long before she became a national heroine, Cortnee Vine was just an eager young player developing her skills at Redcliffe’s Peninsula Power FC. Vine first joined the club as a 12-year-old in 2010, playing for coach Garry Dye’s U-12 girls’ side.

Dye recalls that the lanky Vine arrived blessed with great athleticism but little technical prowess. Her blistering pace, however, stood out. Dye worked to hone her skills and she soon became one of the youth team’s top strikers. Vine often played against boys’ teams in higher divisions to test herself.

Vine’s dedication and constant improvement paid off, eventually earning her selection for the Matildas. Earlier this year, she led her professional club Sydney FC to the A-League championship with 15 goal contributions in 18 games.

After being named in Australia’s squad for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, Vine started the opening matches, bringing her trademark speed and finishing ability to the Matildas attack. However, a defeat to Nigeria in the group stage prompted head coach Tony Gustavsson to change tactics and switch formations. As a result, Vine lost her place in the first XI.

But the team player embraced her new role as a super-sub. Coming on as a substitute against the likes of Denmark and Canada, Vine provided fresh legs and energy . This team-first mentality was rewarded in the tense quarter-final against France – with her scoring the decisive penalty to send Australia to their first Women’s World Cup semi-final. Her composure in the high-stakes moment showed her maturity on the world stage.

The journey may have ended in the semis, but Vine left her mark on the tournament. For the girl who started out chasing a ball in Redcliffe, it has been a long but rewarding road to World Cup glory.

The Australian squad was finalised last week following an intensive training camp on the Gold Coast. The national selectors faced some tough decisions as they whittled the 50-man squad down to the final 20.

“This was tough,” said national player development manager Andrew Riddell. “Camp was super competitive and that didn’t make things easy for selectors.”

Redcliffe Padres pitcher/infielder Blake Barlow and infielder Tom Chessell were among the standouts to secure their places. Both will now join the team in Taiwan as they vie for a podium finish.

Barlow, Chessell and three other Padres – Beau Allsworth, Zane Overlack and Cooper Reed – were among 50 elite players vying for 20 roster spots during the gruelling eight-day camp on the Gold Coast.

According to Riddell, a number of players have stepped up their game and forced their way into consideration. “We had an initial list of 28 players named after January’s U18 National Championships, but some guys who weren’t on that list made the team.”

In the end, Redcliffe’s two representatives proved they belong among Australia’s best.

The tournament kicks off on August 31 against hosts and recent tournament finalists Taiwan.

Puerto Rico, the Czech Republic and powerhouses Mexico and South Korea join Australia and Taiwan in Group A.

Fitness Instructor and Accomplice Face Charges After Alleged Assault at Cactus Jacks Restaurant

A fitness instructor and another individual are facing serious charges after an alleged violent incident that took place at Cactus Jacks restaurant in Redcliffe. The incident occurred on the night of 4 August 2023 and has left the local community shocked and concerned.

Jarrod Anthony Lane, 24, from Burpengary, and Jayden Lee Casella, 25, from Newport, appeared before the Redcliffe Magistrates Court on 21 August to face charges related to the incident.

According to police reports, the two individuals were asked to leave Cactus Jacks restaurant on Redcliffe Pde after allegedly terrorizing both staff and diners. They then allegedly blew a vape into the face of the restaurant’s staff and threw hand sanitiser at them.

Following the alleged assault at Cactus Jacks, the two men reportedly moved on to Papi’s Mexican Kitchen, where they were accused of causing further damage during an altercation with staff. CCTV footage captured the tense confrontation between the two men and the restaurant staff.

The situation then escalated when Jayden Lee Casella allegedly struck Avan Jiminez, the 40-year-old owner of Cactus Jacks, with a glass in an unprovoked attack. The glass which reportedly shattered upon impact, caused serious injury to Jiminez’s head. The victim was rushed to Redcliffe Hospital for treatment. He remained there until the early hours of the following day.

Lane was charged with committing a public nuisance, while Casella faced charges of public nuisance, assault occasioning bodily harm while armed, and being adversely affected by an intoxicating substance.

Both Lane and Casella have sought an adjournment to seek legal advice. Casella, who did not appear in court, was waiting for additional evidence, including body-worn footage from police officers.

Magistrate Mark Bucknall adjourned the proceedings to 21 September, giving the accused individuals and their legal teams time to prepare and gather additional evidence.

Teagan Micah Takes Next Step with Liverpool in the Women’s Super League

Liverpool FC Women have signed Redcliffe State High School alumna and Australian international goalkeeper Teagan Micah to strengthen their squad ahead of the 2023-24 English Women’s Super League (WSL) season. The 25-year-old will now be tested in one of the top women’s leagues as the Reds’ new shot-stopper.

Micah joins Liverpool after two successful seasons with FC Rosengård in Sweden. There, she won back-to-back Damallsvenskan titles and the Swedish Women’s Cup. She helped Rosengård to the groups of the 2023 Women’s Champions League with solid goalkeeping in the qualifying rounds.

The keeper has 14 caps for the Matildas including an appearance at the 2019 Women’s World Cup. Earlier this year, she overcame a serious concussion to return to football in time for the Matildas’ World Cup campaign.

Moving to Liverpool

At Liverpool, Micah will be battling for the No.1 spot as they look to build on their first season back in the WSL following promotion in 2022. The Reds impressed in their opening game last season, beating defending champions Chelsea. However, they finished in 7th place, well out of contention for a European spot.

Liverpool FC is a historic football club – England’s most successful in Europe – but are still building their women’s side to compete with the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal.

Ambitions at new club

Micah expressed her excitement at joining Liverpool, citing the club’s history and stature. She also cited the high level of competition in the WSL as a key factor in her decision.

The Australian keeper was clear about her ambitions at Liverpool, saying she hopes to help the club qualify for the UEFA Women’s Champions League in the coming years.

Liverpool are currently preparing for the 2023-24 campaign, with ongoing pre-season fixtures including the AMOS Women’s French Cup against Paris Saint-Germain on August 28. Their league opener against Arsenal on October 1 will give Micah the chance to come up against Matildas teammates Steph Catley and Caitlin Foord.

Joining the up-and-coming WSL side is the latest impressive step in Micah’s career progression.

Anticipation is building for the much-awaited return of Redcliffe’s Oktoberfest and this year, it’ll be twice as fun – two whole days, promising even more German beer, wine, food, games, and entertainment to delight the senses!

The festival, organised by Beam Entertainment, will take place at the Webb Hall at Redcliffe Showgrounds. On Friday, 29 September 2023, the revelry will kick off at 3:30 p.m. and continue until 10:00 p.m. The following day, the fun will resume at 11:00 a.m. and go on until 10:00 p.m. However, it’s important to note that this is an 18+ event, ensuring that attendees can fully indulge in the spirits of the occasion.
