A Redcliffe Museum exhibition is set to bring Australian and international music posters from the 1960s to the 1980s to the peninsula, drawing on the National Gallery of Australia’s touring collection.
Enjoy this trip: The art of music posters opens on Saturday 7 November and runs until 21 February 2027. The exhibition at 75 Anzac Avenue is free, with designs spanning psychedelic rock, Australian pop and changing approaches to printed music promotion.
Among the Australian acts represented are Mental As Anything and Stephen Cummings. City of Moreton Bay also lists Goanna, The Doors, Cream, The Who, Grateful Dead and Paul McCartney’s Wings among the featured acts. The council says more than 70 printed posters will be displayed alongside a soundtrack associated with the period.

Redcliffe Museum Exhibition Traces Changing Designs
The collection includes work linked to the Summer of Love and San Francisco’s counterculture scene, together with Australian examples of music promotion and experimental printmaking. Melting typefaces, strong colour combinations and kaleidoscopic compositions are among the design elements explored across the three decades.
A 1982 poster by Paul Worstead is used to publicise the exhibition. Titled Mental as anything – Creatures of leisure (Martin), it forms part of the National Gallery’s collection, having been donated by the artist in 1994. The wider collection brings together Australian and international approaches to music poster design, including examples of counterculture art and promotional styles developed before digital production became widespread.
Opening Talk And Retro Events
Leanne Santoro, the National Gallery’s Curator, Sharing the National Collection, will speak at the official opening on Saturday 7 November. Singer and DJ Megan Barnes is also scheduled to perform during the free event, which runs from 10:30 a.m. to noon. The museum has scheduled two music trivia events and a hands-on vinyl-art workshop during the exhibition. The trivia sessions cover popular songs from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, while the workshop uses collage, decoupage and stencilling to make music-inspired artwork. Unlike general exhibition admission, the workshop has a separate charge.
Before reaching Redcliffe, the touring exhibition was scheduled at Wagga Wagga Art Gallery in New South Wales from 11 July to 18 October 2026. The National Gallery touring program receives support through the Australian Government’s National Collecting Institutions Touring and Outreach Program. Redcliffe Museum is open Wednesday to Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. It is closed on Mondays, Tuesdays and public holidays.
